Group Leader

A/Prof. Agustin Schiffrin

Agustin's research interests lie within the fields of experimental condensed matter physics, advanced materials, nanoscience and ultrafast photonics. His research deals with the synthesis of functional low-dimensional nanomaterials, characterised by low-temperature scanning probe techniques, x-ray absorption and photoelectron spectroscopies, and ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopies.

Dr. Daniel Moreno Cerrada

Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Daniel Moreno Cerrada

Daniel received his PhD from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2021. His research interest involves electronic and magnetic properties of 2D metal-organic frameworks on metallic and decoupling substrates. He is an expert in STM and UHV systems, as well as photoemission synchrotron techniques.

Julian Ceddia

Julian is expected to complete his PhD at the end of 2024 and will continue to work in our team as a postdoctoral researcher in 2025. He brings expertise in scanning-probe microscopy, STM automation, and nanofabrication techniques. His main research line includes characterising 2D materials on gate-tunable heterostructure devices via low-temperature STM and STS.

Nathaniel Walters-Brown

Honours Student

Nathaniel Walters-Brown

This year, Nathaniel joined our group as an honours student with an interest in 2D MOFs that host non-trivial quantum phases. His project aims to control such phases by synthesising 2D MOFs on gate-tunable heterostructure devices and characterising them via low-temperature STM and STS. Nathaniel is expected to complete his double bachelor’s degree in science and biomedical science in 2025.

Honours Student

Scott Bennet

Scott joined our group in 2024. His research aims to take cutting-edge machine-learning techniques and apply them to STM automation. Scott is also a co-founder everdawn.ai, an AI consultancy start-up.

Julian Siedle

Honours Student

Julian Siedle

Julian joined our group in 2024 for his honour's project which brings AI into the realm of condensed matter physics. His research aims to apply new machine-learning techniques to automation problems in STM. Julian also works as a law clerk, where he assists in high-value technology litigation.
